Do you ever feel too overwhelmed to deal with your problems? If so, you’re not alone. According to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, in any given year, 1 in 5 Canadians experiences a mental illness.
If you or a loved one is suffering from anxiety, depression, trauma, or other mental health concerns, you may be wondering if therapy is worth it.
So, Is Therapy Really Worth It?
The effectiveness of therapy hinges on multiple factors, including the individual's commitment and ability to be open and honest, the specific therapeutic method employed, and the relationship between the individual and the therapist. However, research shows that mental health treatment has made recovery a reality for most people suffering from mental illness. In fact, approximately 75 percent of people who do psychotherapy show some benefit from it.
With qualified counsellors and diverse therapeutic approaches like cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), and humanistic therapy, among others, individuals can explore and understand their thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.
5 Reasons Therapy Is Worth It
For those unfamiliar with therapy, the financial and time commitment can appear daunting, raising doubts about whether it really works or if therapy is a waste of time. Nevertheless, decades of research have shown the benefits that therapy can offer. Here's a glimpse into what it can provide:
1. Improved Mental Health
Therapy provides a safe and supportive space for individuals to explore and understand their thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. Through this exploration, individuals can develop coping mechanisms, learn to manage stress, and gain insight into the root causes of their challenges.
Research by the American Psychiatric Association shows “that most people who receive psychotherapy experience symptom relief and are better able to function in their lives,” leading to improved mental health and well-being.
2. Improve Physical Health
According to the American Psychiatric Association, “Psychotherapy has also been shown to improve emotional and psychological well-being and is linked with positive changes to the mind and body.” Benefits of improved mental well-being include fewer sick days, fewer medical problems, fewer cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, and an increase in energy.
3. Enhanced Coping Skills
Counsellors teach practical skills and strategies to help individuals cope with life's challenges. This includes stress management techniques, communication skills, problem-solving strategies, and mindfulness practices resulting in overall well-being.
4. Increased Self-Awareness
Therapy encourages self-reflection and self-awareness, helping individuals gain a deeper understanding of themselves. Through therapy, individuals can reflect and learn to understand their feelings, thoughts, fears, and dreams in a safe and confidential space. They can examine their past and current behaviours and experiences and uncover recurring themes or patterns that can lead to personal growth, a clearer sense of identity, and a greater ability to make positive life changes.
5. Better Relationships
Therapy often addresses interpersonal dynamics and communication patterns. By gaining insights into relational patterns and learning healthier ways to communicate, individuals can improve their relationships with others. This can be particularly valuable for couples and families seeking to navigate conflicts and strengthen their connections.
How to Tell if Your Therapy is Working?
So, does therapy really work? Let’s unpack that with the signs that it is.
- You experience changes in your thought patterns and gain better control over your emotions. You might feel less angry when stuck in a traffic jam or worry less while lying in bed at night.
- You are looking forward to therapy.
- You feel better—happier, lighter, and more energetic.
- Your communication with your loved ones is improving, and they are noticing changes in you.
- You have more hopes and dreams.
- You notice improvement in your physical health, such as increased energy, fewer headaches, or a stronger immune system.
